Using toys
Parents need to decide if a toy is appropriate, as well as safe.10 Essential Steps:
- Do not let children under three use toys marked not for that age group.
- Beware of small children using older children's toys.
- Recognise different abilities, such as special needs.
- Read and save all instructions.
- Supervise play when called for, such as with water.
- Teach children to tidy up and put away their toys.
- Check for wear, especially sharp edges, loose stuffing, splinters, or parts getting detached. Small parts are a choking risk.
- Broken toys should be repaired, or disposed of. Keep deflated balloons, loose plastic and packaging away from children to avoid suffocation.
- Small batteries are a choking hazard. Young children should not recharge batteries.
- Toy guns should not be realistic enough to be mistaken for real firearms.
